In mid-March, the American Board of Medical Specialties officially recognized addiction medicine as a medical subspecialty, a decision that will mean increased training and board certification for doctors and hopefully boost the quality of and access to care nationwide.
“This will raise the national level of training” said Dr. Scott Teitelbaum, the medical director of the UF Health Recovery Center and an associate professor of psychiatry and pediatrics. “It’s also a landmark event because it recognizes addiction disorder as treatable and preventable and hopefully will help to shed the stigma surrounding addiction.”
